Within the Japanese Culture, ‘Ma’ is described as a pause in time, an interval or emptiness in the space and that shapes the whole. Within the Western world we do not have a word like that. The Utility of Cessation is a Western interpretation of ‘Ma’. The diverse ways of interacting with the instruments allow the viewer to take a moment and enjoy the stillness.
