About the heritage

Housed in a former military barrack and adjoining industrial warehouse, Kazerne celebrates the impact of design by surrounding guests with recent work from design talent in an environment where they eat, drink and stay.

The main building dates from 1825 and is one of the first buildings in the Netherlands specifically built for the military police. At the end of the 19th century, service spaces, stables and a coach house were added, together forming a municipal monument. The monumental part is one of the oldest complexes in the city, in the area “de Bergen” even one of the two oldest. In 1925, exactly 100 years later, an industrial warehouse was added for the municipal cleaning service. The stables were converted into offices for the supervisors, the coach house into a fire station and the main building into three flats.

Renovated between 2014 and 2019 with great attention to the original beauty, the heritage building has 2,000 square metres of exhibition space (with changing exhibitions every six months), with eight luxury hotel rooms and lofts, several meeting rooms, a design shop, a metropolitan restaurant with Italian touch and the fine-dining restaurant with Vintage French touch, named after the fire engine, Benz at Kazerne. Envision a museum-like platform, an Old World monument transformed into a stunning new contemporary hotel.
