Double sustainable – a live interview with Dave Hakkens & Nienke Hoogvliet

In cooperation with online platform DesignDigger.nl Kazerne organises a special double interview with Dave Hakkens and Nienke Hoogvliet. These two designers both have an independent practice in which they combine sustainable living and working in a holistic way. How do they use design to create a better world? What practical choices do they make in realising this dream? And above all: what can we learn from Dave and Nienke?

Nienke Hoogvliet develops sustainable materials and products, for example a yarn made from Dutch seaweed or leather made from fish skin. During DDW, she presents her new project Value//Values, an investigation into the value of things. This value should depend on our own values, in order to give meaning to these objects. But how do you find out how much something is worth? With an interactive exhibition, Nienke Hoogvliet asks visitors how their values translate into value. For this purpose she developed two carpets, in which she records the making process from sheep to carpet. One carpet was made in Armenia, the other in the Netherlands. Which one is worth more? And how do you measure that?

With his long-term project Precious Plastic, Dave Hakkens investigates new ways of recycling plastic. To make his products, he only uses a shredder, a press and a 3D printer. He shared the construction plans and instructions for the machines online, where they can be downloaded free of charge. His goal is to develop a system that can recycle plastic anywhere in the world and by anyone. His latest project is the construction of a sustainable community in rural Portugal. It’s one big experiment in autarchic living and working. Of course, everything is documented online, so that others can learn from it.
