Theodora Alfredsdottir & Daniel Durnin for Thomas eyck
Fire in the hole! A phrase that Theodora Alfredsdottir & Daniel Durnin took quit literally. Subterranean Formation is on display in the exhibition CIRCULAR>MATERIALISTS.
Traditionally clay is dug out of the ground, refined and then shaped, in one way or another, by hand. Theodora and Daniel wanted to turn this process upside down, so the finalized object becomes a result of a controlled uncertainty. Firing into a cylindrical hole that is dug in a clay vein defines the inner part of the vessel. The outside, however, is completely controlled be the surrounding soil. After firing, the vessel is dug out as if it were an archeologic excavation; the result is a surprise.
