NEW ICONS – RIETVELD NOW
Who are the design innovators in 2017? If Rietveld would still be alive, what would he make now? Would he be called Maarten Baas? Dave Hakkens, Jalila Essaïdi, Jella Lena van Eck, or another name?

NEW ICONS – RIETVELD NOW
In 2017, the Netherlands celebrates 100 years art movement De Stijl. With a large exhibition, Kazerne joins the theme year Mondriaan to Dutch Design. The interest of the podium for design surpasses the straight lines and primary colours of De Stijl.
THE NEW RIETVELD?
During their visit to NEW ICONS – RIETVELD NOW, guests were invited to vote for the designer that they think will develop into ‘the new Rietveld’. Jalila Essaïdi was selected by them as the person most likely to be known as an icon in 100 years. In Kazerne she presented Mestic, the project in which she converts cow manure into sustainable materials and doing so, contributes to a circular economy.
The focus is on content: the blending between form and function, and the search for a universal language to interprete the contemporary society. Together with the designers and the audience, Kazerne tries to pierce through the zeitgeist, and with your help try to predict which designers will survive the ravages of time.
